LIBRARY OUT LOUD presents Rhythm & Rhymes: Black History Month Festival.

This Black History Month we're celebrating literary luminaries and rising stars. The February 25, 2023 program focuses on the theme, "Sentiments of Sankofa" in an effort to commemorate Black history "Then" and "Now."

THE RHYME AND REASON

"It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing."

Rhythm & Rhymes celebrates the cultural heritage of jazz and poetry through the lens of literature, spoken word, instrumentation, performance, and songs. Our public art programs are designed to shape thoughts, build a sense of community, and open the door for meaningful dialogue while knocking down the walls that constrain commonality.

Join us for a celebration of the arts. The Black History Month Festival, which focuses on the theme, “Sentiments of Sankofa,” will celebrate history, heritage, and the humanities through spoken word, stories, and songs.

Sentiments of Sankofa, is a contemporary response to Dr. Carter G. Woodson's call to revisit the contributions of African Americans and Dr. Jerri Cobb Scott's call to see ourselves in books. The interactive exhibition explores archival resources and the vital importance of Black cultural expression through the lens of Black librarianship and the literary works of R. Gregory Christie. The February 25th program will serve as an African American Read-In and will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

The festivities will include Rhythm & Rhymes Storytime starring librarian Lisa Love and saxophonist Derwin Daniels and a Jazz Baby Bookmaking Workshop with award-winning illustrator R. Gregory. Access to the author event is free and audience members may reserve a book signing ticket or Culture Pass for chances to win author exclusives. When you register, you will have the option to pre-order signed copies of Jazz Baby from Scribes & Vibes Bookshop or contribute to the adopt a book program. You do not have to purchase a book or make a monetary donation to attend in-person author events or virtual author visits, however, reservations for the February 25th cartooning and bookbinding class are required.
