How data informs Edoardo Molinari’s WITB https://www.golfwrx.com/743112/how-data-informs-edoardo-molinaris-witb/ https://www.golfwrx.com/743112/how-data-informs-edoardo-molinaris-witb/#respond Thu, 18 Jul 2024 13:40:45 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=743112 Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

Molinari said his data-driven approach has helped him most with strategy – more specifically, it has opened his eyes to use his driver more often off the tee.

“Strategy is a big thing,” Molinari said. “I think off the tee especially, I’m a good driver of the ball, and once I started looking at the numbers a bit more in-depth, I realized I could hit driver a lot more often than I used to. So I would say, these days, I hit driver a lot more than other players simply because, A) I’m more accurate than average and, B) I’m a little bit shorter than average. Especially on shorter holes, I try and push it up a bit more, as much as I can, and I feel like I’ve been gaining shots in that area for sure.”

On that note, Molinari recently switched into Titleist’s new GT3 8-degree driver, which he said provides more consistent spin rates and roughly 5 to 6 more yards of distance compared to his previous driver.

On the lower end of his setup, Molinari uses four wedges (PW, 52, 56 and 60 degrees) – a decision that was solidified by the proof he found in the data.

“Looking at the numbers, I realized that I could gain a lot more with the wedges … if I didn’t have a 3-iron,” Molinari said. “So I basically have a bit of a bigger gap between my 4-iron and the hybrid. But the thing is, once you’re that far away from the green, all you’re trying to do is just trying to hit the green. So I don’t need a perfect number there, but I’m happier to have some more options around the greens, and especially from shots in the 75- to 125-yard range.”

Head over to PGATour.com for the full article.

Entering the tournament on the heels of four missed cuts, all Irishman Shane Lowry did was better his nearest competitor (Tommy Fleetwood) by six strokes at the first Open in Northern Ireland in 68 years.

Here’s what Lowry had in the bag for his absolutely clinical drubbing of the field on the County Antrim coast five years ago.

Scotty Cameron unveils new B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters https://www.golfwrx.com/742983/scotty-cameron-unveils-new-b3-triple-black-design-ltd-putters/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 14:19:27 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=742983 Titleist has today announced the launch of its new Scotty Cameron B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters, a special run of classic, playable blade designs crafted in a Tour Black finish.

Inspired by convertible car culture – where a black paintjob, black interior and black soft top signifies a “triple black” color combination – these special release putters feature four of Scotty’s most popular blade configurations, revisited with his own “triple black” design format: a black finish, black shaft, and black grip.

In select Titleist golf shops worldwide beginning Friday, July 26th, the new B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters will be offered in four models: the Newport 2 (available in right-hand and left-hand), Newport 2 Long Neck, Santa Fe and Catalina. The lineup blends classic setups with modern head shapes and tour-inspired dual-milled face technology.

“Our Triple Black putters have always been a popular option on Tour with players who not only like a stealthy, cool-looking design, but also want an extra solution for reducing sun glare. We created the B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters to give dedicated golfers that tour-quality experience in four classic configurations.” – Scotty Cameron

    B3 Triple Black Design Models

B3 Triple Black Design LTD Newport 2

The flagship model of the B3 Triple Black LTD line, the Newport 2 is modeled after the crisp, mechanical shape of the Super Select Newport 2. The B3 Triple Black LTD Newport 2 is offered in both right-hand and left-hand models.

B3 Triple Black Design LTD Newport 2 Long Neck

An I-beam style long neck is added to the familiar Super Select Newport 2 head shape, promoting a more straight-back-straight-through putting stroke through a near-face balanced setup.

B3 Triple Black Design LTD Santa Fe

Inspired by the popular model from Scotty’s early career, the Santa Fe features an I-beam style flare 1.5 neck and a shape based on the softer, rounded features of the Super Select Newport. The configuration of a flare 1.5 neck and a Newport-style head is currently only available on Tour.

B3 Triple Black Design LTD Catalina

The Catalina, inspired by the Classic X, features a shape slightly wider than a standard Newport and more closely related to the Super Select Newport Plus. Instead of matching the Classic X’s double bend shaft, the updated setup features a shaft-over-spud design and a modern single bend shaft, giving the player near-face balanced performance.

The line’s dual-milled face technology offers a tour-inspired feel by combining the softness of deep-milled putters with the consistency and feedback of mid-milled offerings.

The B3 Triple Black Design LTD putter line features performance balanced weighting with two customizable heel-toe sole weights. The Catalina uses stainless steel weights made in 10-gram, 15-gram and 20-gram increments, while the other models use heavier tungsten in 30-gram, 35-gram and 40-gram denominations matched to the associated putter lengths of 33-inches, 34-inches and 35-inches. The loft on each model is 3.5-degrees and the lie angle is 70-degrees.

Each B3 Triple Black Design LTD putter features a black Pistolini Plus grip that complements a premium embroidered, custom-designed B3 Triple Black Design LTD headcover. The accompanying Tour Black stepless steel shaft includes the line’s custom B3 Triple Black Design LTD shaft band.

B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters will be available worldwide on July 26th, 2024, at select Titleist authorized golf shops, while supplies last and are priced at $750 each.

New Callaway Opus, Opus Platinum wedges announced https://www.golfwrx.com/742775/new-callaway-opus-opus-platinum-wedges-announced/ https://www.golfwrx.com/742775/new-callaway-opus-opus-platinum-wedges-announced/#comments Mon, 15 Jul 2024 16:30:01 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=742775 We spotted Callaway’s new Opus wedges on the PGA Tour in May. The design, however, in its “S6” incarnation, has been present in pros bags for much longer, game by the likes of Jon Rahm, Yuka Saso, and Xander Schauffele.

Today, Callaway is officially announcing the retail launch of its Opus and Opus Platinum wedges and pulling back the curtain on the most tour-tested, tour-validated wedge in company history in the process.

2024 Callaway Opus wedges: What’s new, key technology

    Spin Gen Face Technology

Callaway engineers combine three elements for what they’re calling “Spin Gen Face Technology.” More grooves are present on the face thanks to decreasing the distance between each groove. As with previous designs, engineers also leverage offset groove-in-groove design for more spin, particularly on open-face shots. Finally, the face has been aggressively blasted with quartz to create additional roughness. The sum total of all these elements? More spin, particularly from the rough and in wet conditions, as well as lower launch.

    Tour feedback

As a result of extensive testing and input from tour professionals, Opus wedges feature a higher toe peak, refined leading edge radius, and smooth hosel transition for what the company calls its “best wedge shape ever.” Owing to professional input, Callaway offers Opus wedges with a full range of grinds.

2024 Callaway Opus wedges: Additional model details

    Opus Platinum wedges

In addition to the standard Opus wedge, Callaway is also unveiling premium MiM (metal injection molded) Opus Platinum wedges. The wedges feature 17 grams of tungsten bonded high in the topline of the club for lower launch with more spin as well as a proprietary blend of metals in the body of the club for optimum feel and performance.

    What Callaway says

On the name…Paul Winterhalter – Product Manager: There is an art to the game, and we really felt this quote summarized what this product really meant: where the art meets science. So, with that, introducing the new name for our franchise of wedges is Opus. In general, the name has an air of elegance to it. There’s a sense of beauty, and especially as you look at the product and we get these in your hands, you’ll see that there really is just a new look, just a beautiful sense to them. They’re quite elegant…for us, there was a ton of time and effort put into this product, and we really felt that the product was befitting of the name Opus.

On the different design mentality…Brian Herr – R&D Manager, Wedges: “We started with a different mentality this time. We didn’t design a wedge and then bring it out and see what they thought. We started from the ground up, we started with shaping. We had multiple different shapes that we brought out and showed, we got their feedback, we iterated, we got their feedback, we iterated again. So, we really let the Tour players design this product to a shape they wanted. And then after we got a shape that we loved, we started on the sole grind. So, there’s notes here all over of what Dean tested and what he built and how he went about making products for players and getting their feedback. But really, it was 18 months in the making of going and testing and then iterating and then going back out, getting as many players as feedback as we could and helping them to have them help us design it.”

On the available grinds…Paul Winterhalter: “Looking at the grind offerings, as wedges go, this is crucial for us. On the right-hand side, we have the S and W grinds where we do the lion’s share of sales. The S is our standard everyday grind with a standard sole, while the W has a wider, more forgiving full sole…We also wanted to create a product that’s a better fit for better players, so we introduced the T grind, which is new, and the C grind.

Brian Herr: The T grind is narrow and sits low to the ground, incredible for open-faced shots, particularly for players who pick the ball cleanly without taking a divot. On the other hand, the C grind is a departure from what we’ve done before, designed to keep the leading edge low when opening the face, suitable for versatile shot-making from various lies. The wider sole in the C grind provides better feedback through the turf compared to the T grind. Both grinds cater to skilled players who want to make any shot around the green.

On the Opus Platinum wedge design…Paul Winterhalter: The Opus Platinum looks super premium with MIM (Metal Injection Molding) lines in the back and elevated curb appeal. As a quick elevator pitch, we have the Spin Gen face technology as with Opus and Tour-validated shaping so those are kind of baked into the product. But what we’re doing to take it up another level is that trajectory control using tungsten. And then that unique MIM construction. We’ve talked about this already but through a large amount of tungsten being bonded into that topline to help the CG placement…and the next piece of that is the Metal Injection Molding – it’s not caste, it’s not forged, it’s kind of something new for us.

Brian Herr: MiM is a different way to manufacture, it’s more precise, and it also provides better feel. We’ve done extensive testing on MIM versus other manufacturing methods. MIM dampens better than other materials even the same material in different methods. MIM is a better dampener, so you’re going to notice a premium good, soft feel.

Three Swing Challenge: Testing the Edel Array F-2 putter https://www.golfwrx.com/742762/three-swing-challenge-testing-the-edel-array-f-2-putter/ https://www.golfwrx.com/742762/three-swing-challenge-testing-the-edel-array-f-2-putter/#comments Fri, 12 Jul 2024 13:25:20 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=742762 This week on the Three Swing Challenge, we have the Edel Array F-2 putter. With the Array line of putters, Edel gives golfers several different options to match their putting styles and tendencies. It is a cool concept, but let’s see how it performs.

    Why three swings?

Many years ago, the legendary Barney Adams, founder of Adams Golf told us this:

“My formula as a fitter was three shots only. I discounted No. 1 just because it was the first one, counted 100 percent of No. 2 and discounted No. 3 because the player was starting to adjust.”

New plaque commemorates Rory McIlroy’s famous Scottish Open 2-iron shot https://www.golfwrx.com/742722/new-plaque-commemorates-rory-mcilroys-famous-scottish-open-2-iron-shot/ https://www.golfwrx.com/742722/new-plaque-commemorates-rory-mcilroys-famous-scottish-open-2-iron-shot/#comments Fri, 12 Jul 2024 13:13:59 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=742722 Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from an article our Andrew Tursky filed for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. You can read the full article here.

In case you forgot, McIlroy closed the tournament with back-to-back birdies to snatch the title from Scotland’s own Robert MacIntyre. McIlroy’s final approach was a perfectly executed 2-iron stinger to 11 feet, a putt he holed for a one-shot victory.

The shot was so good, in fact, that The Renaissance Club in Scotland commemorated it with a plaque. And McIlroy was happy to recall one of the best shots of his career in his Wednesday press conference. He had not yet seen the plaque but had seen photos posted online.

“To hit two iron shots like that and to hole the putts what I needed to, yeah, it was awesome,” McIlroy said. “Sort of I felt in some ways bad that it came at the expense of Bob but at the same time it was amazing to win a tournament that I had never won before. Good memories and good to be back.”

Looking back, the famous shot actually almost never happened at all … at least, not with a 2-iron.

McIlroy has a 5-wood in the bag most weeks instead of a 2-iron. But in preparation for last year’s trip to Scotland, McIlroy dove into his stash of backup clubs in his garage and pulled out a 17-degree TaylorMade P760 2-iron. The low-flying iron was meant to replace his higher-flying 5-wood, giving him the option to hit the ball a bit lower and with less spin to pierce the Scottish winds.

Obviously, that decision worked to perfection.

The equipment adjustments that made Davis Thompson a PGA Tour winner https://www.golfwrx.com/742718/the-equipment-adjustments-that-made-davis-thompson-a-pga-tour-winner/ https://www.golfwrx.com/742718/the-equipment-adjustments-that-made-davis-thompson-a-pga-tour-winner/#comments Thu, 11 Jul 2024 17:04:44 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=742718 Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from an article our Andrew Tursky filed for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. You can read the full article here.

Thompson entrusts Craig Allan, director of Sea Island’s Golf Performance Center, who works with various PGA TOUR players on their fitting needs. Last year, Thompson informed Allan that something wasn’t right with his irons. He’d been striping his driver with a Titleist ’21 Pro V1 and Titleist TSR3 driver, but he was struggling with distance control with his irons due to low spin, while catching too many fliers out of the rough.

Allan offered Thompson three solutions: weaken the lofts of his current irons, test out some higher-spinning golf balls, and test out different iron heads and shafts. Thompson didn’t want to hit the ball higher with his irons; he wanted to address the golf ball instead. Initially, Thompson decided to change into a Titleist Pro V1 Star prototype golf ball that offers higher spin rates.

Although the ball change provided a nice solution for his iron play, his driver play suffered.

“(At the) Memorial (Tournament presented by Workday) last year, I started playing a spinnier Titleist golf ball, and it was great for my iron setup at the time,” Thompson said. “But kind of over time I saw my driver’s stats kind of go down, which is kind of a strong suit of my game. So we were trying to figure out after Valspar (Championship) this year how we can get the driver back going.”

Following the Valspar, Thompson and Allan got back to work in the testing center. Thompson was ready for Allan’s third option, which meant he would switch back into his previous Titleist Pro V1 ’21 golf ball, restore his driver dominance, and begin looking at different iron heads with weaker lofts and different shafts to gain spin and distance control.

After two weeks of testing different iron head-and-shaft combinations with the lower spinning golf ball, Allan and Thompson decided on the Titleist 620 MB irons (5-9) equipped with True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid Tour Issue X100 shafts, which offer slightly higher spin and launch compared to the True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts that Thompson was playing previously.

Clanton on his iron setup: “I love the blades with the low irons because I can kind of feel a little more around the greens, and if I have a little feely shot from like 150 I can hit a 7 iron there,” Clanton said. “It’s one of those things where I like to feel a little more with the lower irons. Then with the upper irons I like a little bit more forgiveness, especially when you’re hitting it from 210. You don’t really want a blade looking down at the ground, so it’s been a great setup for awhile.”

Clanton on his TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver:  “My favorite club in my bag is my BRNR Mini Driver. This club has been a life saver off the tee, and off the deck, as well…the first week I ever put it in was actually at Cherry Hills for the U.S. Am. I think it was literally right when they came out with the Mini Driver, and a bunch of my teammates said I never liked 3-wood because I never hit it, and it was true. I hit this [mini driver] off the deck a couple times and it flew perfect. Then I was like, ‘Let’s hit it off the tee,’ and it was flying 285-290 off the tee. I was like this thing is pretty sweet. I’ve kept it in the bag ever since then, and no matter if it’s off a tight lie out of the rough, anything, it’s been awesome. I think it’s probably one of the better clubs I’ve ever received from TaylorMade.

“…I could take out the driver and have the BRNR in and still play well all week. It’s just one of those golf clubs you can hit it off the tee and still hit it far, I can draw it, cut it, hit it low, hit it high. It’s definitely one of my favorites for sure… I don’t think it’ll ever come out of the bag. I really don’t. It’s one of those golf clubs that I absolutely love.”
