“My formula as a fitter was three shots only. I discounted No. 1 just because it was the first one, counted 100 percent of No. 2 and discounted No. 3 because the player was starting to adjust.”

With the rebirth of the iconic Whiteboard profile, Mitsubishi didn’t just re-issue a classic, but rather infused all the company’s latest tech into a new shaft, paying homage to the original with its quintessentially Hawaiian-inspired stylings. In our launch story, we offered a rundown of the key technology in the new WB — 80-ton Dialead pitch fiber, Aerospace-grade MR70 carbon fiber, Consistent Feel Design, and the Xlink Tech Resin System. To go deeper, however, we enlisted our Resident Club Junkie and bona fide shaft nut, Brian Knudson, to track down someone from Mitsubishi at the PGA Show. Fortunately, Mitsubishi’s Director of Global Aftermarket Sales, Jonathan Alongi, was on hand to answer all of BK’s questions.

Our Andrew Tursky talked with Schenk for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. An excerpt below:

In fact, Schenk travels with so many extra clubs that he needs not one, but two golf bags to carry them all.

“I travel with a little more equipment than most people,” Schenk said. “It’s fun for me, probably more fun than playing, honestly.”

He’s a shot maker, and he sets up his golf bag to play to that strength, keeping multiple drivers around for different courses and conditions.

“I’ll do something different (with each of my driver setups),” Schenk told GolfWRX.com. “Some are for a draw, some fade, some I can do both with. Some high, some low. Just fitting whatever the golf course is calling for. If I’m slicing it, I’ll probably play a driver with more loft to help me turn it over a little more.”

But that’s not the only reason he travels with so many clubs. It’s also for the pure enjoyment of strategizing and tinkering.

Tursky, as a scratch golfer, used a 3-club set, while Knudson, a 9-handicapper, used his full bag.

The rules were simple: Play a 9-hole match play at Rackham’s back nine. Every time Tursky makes a par or birdie, he gets to add a club to the bag. Every time Tursky makes a double bogey or worse, he removes a club from the bag.

The catch was that Knudson got to pick the clubs that Tursky had to use, and he didn’t make things easy. Knudson had Tursky start with a Ben Hogan persimmon driver with a steel shaft, a Ben Hogan Apex blade 7-iron with a G-Loomis IMX Boron shaft, and a Cleveland RTX ZipCore “Sip Groove” 52-degree promotional wedge, with an extremely light swing weight.
