Ultimately the best way to find your personal best iron set is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work for you.

We are in the era of not just maximizing distance but also minimizing the penalty of common misses for each player — this applies to irons just as much as it does with any other club in the bag. And of course, proper set makeup and gapping is essential. This is why, now more than ever, custom fitting is essential to help you see results on every swing you make.

We want to give you the tools and information to go out and find what works best for you by offering recommendations for your individual iron set wants and needs with insight and feedback from the people who work every single day to help golfers get peak performance out of their equipment.

Best irons of 2024: The process

The best fitters in the world see all the options available in the marketplace, analyze their performance traits, and pull from that internal database of knowledge and experience like a supercomputer when they are working with a golfer.

It’s essentially a huge decision tree derived from experience and boiled down to a starting point of options—and it has nothing to do with a handicap!

Modern iron sets are designed into player categories that overlap the outdated “what’s your handicap?” model, and at GolfWRX we believe it was important to go beyond handicap and ask specific questions about the most crucial performance elements fitters are looking at.

These are the best iron categories we have developed to help you determine which category is most important for your swing and game.

Best irons of 2024: The categories

2024 Best irons: Best blades

This is by far the most straightforward category because it is defined by a single style of club — the blade AKA the muscle back or MB for short. Although modern variations offer a lot more playability than they did decades ago, blades are still defined by their workability, compact shaping, and lower ball flight. If you are looking for the ultimate test or just prefer something in the more traditional vein, these are for you.

Mizuno Pro 241

Their story: Grain Flow Forged HD in Hiroshima, Japan, Mizuno Pro 241 irons feature better turf interaction than their predecessors thanks to increased bounce (while maintaining the same sole camber). Additionally, the 241 irons feature more centered mass than Mizuno Pro 221 for enhanced feedback. Also contributing to enhanced feedback: Mizuno’s signature soft copper underlay. The topline has been thinned and short irons are more compact.

Fitter comments:

  • “Mizuno has made some of the best blades for over 35 years and the 241 holds up with the rest.”
  • “These are the staple in the blade market options. These just keep getting better and better each generation.”
  • “From a feel and feedback, Mizuno always hits the mark.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Titleist 620MB

Their story: The 620 MB offers ideal turf interaction throughout the set thanks to more camber and a tweaked leading edge. In addition to the sole tweaks, the blade length is progressive from the longest iron to the shortest and the transition is so smooth that unless you set clubs next to each other, it’s quite difficult to notice. The final design element is the face height progression which transitions from more shallow to tall in the pitching wedge to offer the greatest control over ball flight.

Fitter comments:

  • “Exactly what one would expect from a Titleist blade, great feel, incredible control and precision.”
  • “Nothing feels as good as a Titleist blade when hit in the middle.”
  • “Classic as classic gets for the player who wants that.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Srixon Z-Forged II

What Srixon says: “Z-Forged II is a traditional muscle back blade Iron designed in close collaboration with Srixon tour pros. Z-Forged II Irons offer crisp feel, maximum control, and pinpoint workability.”

Fitter comments:

  • “The easiest blade to hit on the market. The longer heal-to-toe blade length inspires confidence to a player who wants to play a blade, but also wants forgiveness.”
  • “Most forgiving blade. Long blade length and V-Sole, with buttery soft feel. First gen looked better in the bag, but this performs better with the updated sole design.”
  • “Incredible feel, the dual sole creates great turf interaction and clean strikes from all lies.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Ping Blueprint T

Their story: The Blueprint T, designed for skilled golfers who prioritize workability, is a single-piece, 8620 carbon steel forging. Its muscle-back design concentrates mass behind the impact zone for a pleasing sound and feel with workability. A shorter heel-face height and narrow soles is designed for a distraction-free appearance at address and consistent turf interaction. Precision-milled grooves and a high-density toe screw provide precise swingweight control.

Fitter comments:

  • “These things are beautiful and clean looking. You don’t see much going on the outside of the iron. Small compact and very hard to hit.”
  • “By far the best blade made.”
  • “Great follow up to last year’s Blueprint that took off after being a proto club. New category opened up for Ping because of prior success. Refining the issues with blades with maintaining the classic look and lofts.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Callaway Apex MB

Their story: Callaway’s “modern tour blade” was developed in collaboration with tour professionals and is designed to deliver efficient turf interaction (thanks to Dynamic Sole Design), optimum workability, and a classic feel in a one-piece, 1025 carbon steel forging. Callaway engineers designed the Apex MB line with progressive CG throughout the set — lower in the long irons for higher launch, higher in the short irons for a more penetrating trajectory.

From the fitters:

  • “The weight…in the back positions the center of gravity directly behind the ball to give the player precision and control over the launch and shape of shots.”
  • “Easier to elevate than the previous generation, the new weight system offers a touch more forgiveness as well while still delivering similar feel.”
  • “A nice blade and a good option from Callaway.”

These are the best iron categories we have developed to help you determine which category is most important for your swing and game.

Best irons of 2024: The categories

2024 Best irons: Top overall performers

This category is the perfect place to start if you’re not quite sure what you are looking for. Distance? Check. Forgiveness? Check. Sleek looks? Check. The top five in the “best irons overall” category are perfect for those golfers who appreciate technology and want something that is going to give them shot options.

Srixon ZX5 Mk II

Their story: MainFrame v2 was developed with an Automated Intelligence process, flex-maximizing variable thickness pattern of grooves, channels, and cavities carefully milled into the backside of Z ZX5 iron faces for high ball speeds. Not only does MainFrame boost COR, but it also repositions mass away from the face and into the toe and sole for a lower CG for easier launch, more consistency, and forgiveness.

Fitter comments:

  • “I’m a big believer in the V-Sole. For high-speed guys who want a little forgiveness and are steep, it just doesn’t stick in the ground. Super soft and high launching. Not a ton of offset. It’s also been a good fit for moderate-to-high handicappers.”
  • “So I would say it, it kind of stands out in its category because it does launch higher than its competitors. It also sits in between some of the models, like, it doesn’t directly compete with a hollow cavity and it doesn’t compete with, like the Cobra King Tour. Like, it’s a degree stronger. For a forged iron, it performs great for us. The only problem is that it is a little bit light in a swing weight, so we have to be careful of who we fit.”
  • “It’s definitely one of our more popular irons for sure. You know, you get a guy who wants to play something small but still wants something more forgiving, and they don’t want kind of that full hollow body iron. I mean, that’s definitely one of our best sellers for sure. We’re seeing that a lot of combos — that’s a one iron that you can definitely combo with the ZX7 for sure.”
  • “I think a lot of guys like the concept of the V-Sole with them…If you’re talking an overall package, you know, for the guy that is looking for something clean. That’s a spectacular golf club. Good looks and good feel and great, you know, great performance, and it fits a lot of categories.”
  • “I think the one struggle a lot of companies have with that category is getting something to spin, so to try and give like guys so they don’t get those knuckleball shots or that fly out of the rough that goes 20 yards longer. I kind of think that that’s what I think makes that item so good is you get some spin on it, and I think it, it looks and feels good enough that like it, a guy that’s a mid-single digit can play it and be like, yeah, that’s good enough for me. But it’s also forgiving enough that a guy that’s in that kind of 12-to-15 kind of category if he wants to reach a little bit and play something that might look a little bit better. It just fits such a huge, huge range of players. I think it’s just awesome.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

TaylorMade P790

Their story: Engineers utilized the variables of tungsten weighting, SpeedFoam Air, and internal mass — with an assist from AI — to precisely give golfers what they need in each iron. For example, launch and forgiveness in the long irons. More specifically, TaylorMade is using what the company calls FLTD CG (flighted CG) to strategically position CG throughout the set (lower in the long irons, higher in the short irons). CG is positioned almost a millimeter lower in the long irons compared to previous generations. In the shorter irons, the higher CG positions allowed engineers to dial in spin and promote accuracy.

Fitter comments:

  • “Best combination of everything. The amalgamation of all irons on the market blended into one mathematically perfect design.”
  • “I think people recognize the name. It’s a very popular club. It stands up to every model in a category.”
  • “That’s the staple in the players distance category. It’s year-in, year-out. It’s tough to beat TaylorMade — they don’t go wrong with that iron, for sure. They make little refinements, but it’s almost like, yeah, just keep making little refinements. Don’t kind of mess that up just because the, I mean, it, it fits such a wide range of players and it’s just such a good iron that fits a wide, wide range of handicaps.”
  • “I think where TaylorMade kind of struggled over the past is getting that spin on the golf club, and I think each generation it just keeps getting better. I think they did an awesome job.”
  • “If it’s not our best-selling iron in the fitting center, it’s always like number two. It’s such a great, great performer across the board. And yeah, it just keeps getting better every year. It’s really awesome; crazy distance on that thing too.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Titleist T150

Their story:  The T150 is slightly larger than the T100, with a thicker topline to help increase distance and forgiveness. Like the T100S irons that came before them, the T150 irons are built 2 degrees stronger than the T100 irons, as well. To improve feel at impact, the T150 has a muscle channel in the back cavity behind the face for a more solid feel at impact. Like the 2023 T100, the T150 also has D18 Tungsten weights in the back cavity, and a refined sole for improved turf interaction.

Fitter comments:

  • “All around great iron and fits a wide range of players.”
  • “A perfect club for those single digit handicaps that still want that extra line of defense when it comes to making the jump to a player iron. Hardly noticeable but that added size and offset compared to the T100 makes it much more comfortable to the golfer and fitter.”
  • “Best combination of forgiveness, feel, workability, and distance.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Srixon ZX7 Mk II

Their story: The players iron ZX7 Mk II features PureFrame: an 80-percent thicker portion of 1020 carbon steel forged behind the sweet spot in the body of the iron for soft-yet-solid-feeling impact. Also significant to the design: A refined Tour V.T. Sole Proprietary sole widths, bounce angles, and notches in the heel and toe of the club aid clean contact from a variety of lies.

Fitter comments:

  • “What I love about that is for that guy that hits it, like square on the face of the golf club. It’s, this is the way I kind of explain to customers and they hit it like, it’s not gonna be the longest. It’s probably not gonna be the straightest, but you will hit seven iron in the exact same distance every time you hit it. And, and I think that’s the appeals to that better player because like very rarely do.”
  • “I’m a personal fan of it. No hot face. No jumpers, does a great job of controlling the spec which we like a lot…quite forgiving. That’s a, that’s a, that’s a major player in that category.”
  • “I mean, two of the five fitters out here play them. I mean, they’re awesome, like they’re still, you know, a small compact players iron, but you still get a lot of help and forgiveness out of them, which I like. You see a lot of these on tour that are non, you know, non-contract guys playing them.”
  • “They did a really good job of not screwing up a good thing. ZX7 was fantastic. It seemed like 50 percent of the non-contract guys in pro golf played that iron. It continues to give very consistent numbers. The better player wants a consistent number. They need to know it’s going to go that distance. This club does that very well.”
  • “Srixon has been the “sleeper” iron company for a number of years now, but I think the secret is out. The ZX7 Mk II fit many different player types, from tour pro to mid-handicapper. The forging is very soft and forgiving, and the iron is very workable for the player with more ability. They didn’t change the shape from ZX7 to Mk II, and I think that’s a great thing.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Mizuno Pro 245

Their story: Pro 245 2- through 8-irons — which are crafted from Gain Flow Forged 4135 Chromoly — feature Hollow Body COR construction for higher COR, higher MOI, and solid feel. Mizuno is also keen to highlight the soft muscle-back feel produced by its Harmonic Impact Technology and the substantial amount of tungsten (47 grams) in the long and mid-irons for ease of launch. Engineers achieved lowest possible placement without contacting the sole for lower and deeper CG via Suspended Tungsten placement.

Fitter comments:

  • “Great combination of ballspeed with a streamlined look.”
  • “It fits a lot of guys that are blade players but with more distance.”
  • “Good looking, forgiving, great feeling players distance iron with very good consistent distance control.”

Best irons of 2024: The categories

2024 Best irons: The shotmakers

Each one of these irons was designed with a single purpose: to provide the ultimate shotmaking weapon. You don’t have to be a tour player to appreciate the pleasure of hitting a well-struck shot with a club engineered to offer superior feedback. This category is all about control — and that doesn’t mean it “has to be a blade.”

Titleist T100

Their story: The “players iron” of the new T-Series family, the T100 iron features an all-new Tour-designed sole, which was inspired by discussions with both the tour staff and the Vokey wedge design team. It features a new variable bounce sole design, which provides less bounce in the heel and more bounce in the toe to facilitate better turf interaction and improved feel.

Fitter comments:

  • “More tech than blades but just as workable. It’s why it gets play on tour. Not a lot of offset and fairly traditional lofts as these want to create some spin for maintaining a steep enough landing.”
  • “Number one played iron on tour. It definitely gets the love it deserves for sure…especially from a turf interaction standpoint. It definitely gets to the turf nice and quick compared to some of the previous generations.”
  • “Incredible feel and feedback while offering a good amount of forgiveness in this category. Can play it from any lie and hit any shot…one of the most played irons on tour for a reason.”
  • “It has good feel. It’s really forgiving for that compact-looking head. It’s got a great sole on it that works really well. It’s got weaker loft, and so therefore it’s going to spin more. It’s really good for the guy with a lot of speed, because it’s not going to jump and go all over the place.”
  • “It’s always been one to throw in the mix for that player who comes in looking for a players iron but not quite a blade. They’ve just slowly kind of kept working on that, that product that’s been in their cycle for a while. I don’t want to say it’s kind of gold standard-like, but that’s definitely one that’s going to be in the mix.”

Callaway Apex CB

Their story: Callaway touts an all-new forged construction in its 2024 Apex CB irons and its associated feel and workability. Forged from 1025 carbon steel in a five-step process, Apex CB ‘24 irons also feature MIM weighting in the toe and similar progressive CG and Dynamic Sole Design to the Apex MB irons.

Fitter comments:

  • “Excellent offering. Clean and easy to aim. Always a great iron.”
  • “Yeah, from my understanding, TCB, like that was kind of its replacement. and TCB was not easy to hit, in my opinion. I find that the guys are hitting it. It’s actually, it’s pretty forgiving for what it is. Guys that are looking for more of that just kind of solid piece, they don’t want to get any of that hollow stuff.”
  • “I really like it. I think it’s a great club. It’s a little, a little above my pay grade in terms of skill, but a really good feeling club. It seems like it’s a good iron all around for that player who, you know, is looking for that CB or that better-player type club.”
  • “I think for that guy who wants something that feels good, that CB just feels fantastic and for how dinky and tiny that thing is, I think it’s not unforgiving. And it just kind of checks all the boxes from a look, sound and feel standpoint. It’s definitely a really good, really good iron for sure.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Mizuno Pro 243

Their story: 4- through 7-irons are Grain Glow Forged HD from a single billet of 4120 Chromoly steel, while 8-GW are forged from 1024 Elite Mild Carbon steel. 4 through 7 irons feature a Flow Microslot for faster ball speeds and increased launch (thanks to more rebound area. The soles of the 243 irons are equipped with a Wrap Around Sole Grind for better turf interaction as well as increased bounce angle. The Soft Copper Underlay is again present as is the Full Satin Brush finish.

Fitter comments:

  • “Amazing forgiveness and workability in this category. The turf interaction is awesome for those who draw and fade the ball.”
  • “Best looking of the shot-making irons.”
  • “Minor refinements from the last one. And for the category of iron, it’s pretty forgiving. They cleaned up the cosmetics a little bit. I mean, it’s a really, really, really good iron for sure.”
  • “Mizuno, the, the 243, you know, that’s another great one. Forged one-piece golf club that’s super solid — no jumpers, Very similar to the ZX 7 but looks better.”
  • “That one continues to be kind of like a unicorn in this category because I like the ball speed…Like almost to the guy, we get more ball speed with that thing.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Ping Blueprint S

Their story: Developed after extensive testing with top Ping professionals, the Blueprint S features a forged cavity-back design, influenced by Ping’s existing “S” series irons. The compact shape, thin top line, and minimal offset make it visually appealing to forged club/blade enthusiasts. The forged 8620 carbon steel head has a clean cavity design with a textured pattern and hydropearl 2.0 chrome finish. Precision-milled grooves and a high-density toe screw enable swingweight fine-tuning.

Fitter comments:

  • “These things are pretty looking. The reduced offset and thinner topline makes this look like a blade, but you get the help and forgiveness. These are fast through the turf and are super easy to work.”
  • “The performance of the iron, it’s great. It’s a rare forged iron from Ping. It looks good. It’s very forgiving. It’s probably the best-performing iron in its category. We’ve been getting a lot of people asking about it. We’ve seen some guys pair it with a blueprint T, a little bit. It looks really good. It’s their best looking one by far.”
  • “I’m a big fan of that iron. I was little surprised by it. I thought it was going to be kind of intimidating from all the tour use and then getting it out on the course. It’s actually a pretty playable iron. It’s been the winner in that category for us.”
  • “What you’ve got is a forged golf club that’s designed by Ping where, you know, they’re always going to the performance first and look and feel second and now you’ve got something that’s got the look and feel that a lot of good players want to feel and great performance.”
  • “I think it’s something that they needed to fill that niche for that forged kind of guy that’s more compact without going into like the old blueprint or the Blueprint T…super tiny blade.”

2024 Best irons: Pure enjoyment

We continue to see an overlap in the way fitters in this category define the top irons. The most playable irons are the most likely to be higher launching, and shots that fly higher make the game more enjoyable for everyone. This reiterates our belief that your iron selection should not be defined by your handicap but instead by what gives you the best opportunity to play your best — and most enjoyable — golf.

Ping G430

Their story: Billed as Ping’s “longest iron ever,” the G430 irons combine a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to two more mph of ball speed, per the company. At the heart of the new addition is the PurFlex cavity badge, an innovation that features seven flex zones that allow more free bending in design to increase ball speed across the face. In combination with a lower CG, the badge aims to contribute to a solid feel and pleasing impact sound.

Fitter comments:

  • “The best G.I. iron on the market. Easy to hit and launch while making great ball speed for distance.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. High launch and packed with forgiveness on those off-center hits. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit. So easy to hit and look at for the average golfer.”
  • “Yeah, I mean, that’s definitely a go-to and in the matrix for sure. I mean, it’s just super easy to hit, super forgiving. They don’t mess that iron up.”
  • “Ping does a great job of building golf clubs. Their design is fantastic and it’s not for everybody, you know, it’s not the lowest-spinning club…but it sure is one of the most forgiving golf clubs and most consistent golf clubs. Ping G430 in that category of club, you can have something that a good player who needs a little help maybe can use because it’s consistent across the face, and you can’t do that with some of the other clubs because they’re not as consistent across the face for the ball speeds. It is a monster for us.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit.”

Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal

Their story: “With the JPX923 Hot Metal, Mizuno introduces “4355 nickel chromoly,” which is 35 percent stronger than the original Hot Metal material and allows for an eight-percent thinner clubface. Cup face construction works in tandem with a deep center of gravity for high launch with stopping power. Mizuno developed Hot Metal Pro, Hot Metal and Hot Metal HL (High Launch) from 175,000 real golf swings recorded via Mizuno’s Swing DNA system.”

Fitter comments:

  • “These are great for a player who flips at the ball but also needs some help and forgiveness. The strong lofts help reduce a player’s launch and spin.”
  • “Great forgiveness with the feel that Mizuno is known for.”
  • “Great looking and great feeling irons.”
  • “If I had a player come in, that’s just your, you know, your average golfer. It’s one that is like, “Hey, this is, this is one to try.” This is gonna produce a lot of ball speed and is super forgiving. You can combo it really well. Mizuno does a great job where you can do combo sets just with lofts.”
  • “It’s very good. It’s one of the most popular. Always in the mix of game improvement irons when people come in and they want to hit something that’s forgiving and that also still feels less clicky.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Titleist T200

Their story:  If there were gripes about the previous generation of T200 irons, it was probably because of feel and sound at impact. Titleist heard your feedback on the previous T200 irons, and it listened. The new 2023 T200 irons have a reengineered chassis to create a stiffer structure and create a more stable feeling and muted sound. They also refined the Max Impact Technology within the head to sit closer to the L-face, further solidifying the feel.

Fitter comments:

  • “Best overall for us. Great looks, workability. Plenty of forgiveness.”
  • “I like the great look of these and they are easy to play for the average golfer.”
  • “That’s a big combo iron for sure, especially, but it’s also, you know, in that player distance category, it’s one of the higher launching ones, and it’s gonna spin a little bit more. I would say some of those irons in that category they launch, you know, they’ve launched a little bit lower and they don’t spin, which it is great for some players, but also some still want to play a smaller package.”
  • “I think it was definitely a big jump from the previous one. Yeah, I mean, one thing I’ve noticed is compared to some of the other irons, even kind of equal loft, it tends to get a little bit more height on it.”
  • “It’s great for one of those guys that if I get in there that’s kind of hitting a little low. It’s one to kind of throw in my hands…you’re seeing that initial launch kind of pick up a little bit compared to some of the other ones.”

Best irons in golf of 2024: Slower swing speed (Easiest to launch) https://www.golfwrx.com/736861/best-irons-in-golf-of-2024-slower-swing-speed-easiest-to-launch/ https://www.golfwrx.com/736861/best-irons-in-golf-of-2024-slower-swing-speed-easiest-to-launch/#comments Mon, 08 Apr 2024 14:00:12 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=736861 In our effort to assemble the 2024 best irons, we have again compiled an expert panel of fitters to help you find out which of the 2024 irons is best for your game.

  • Overall performance
  • Easiest to launch/Slower swing speed
  • Pure enjoyment
  • Shotmakers
  • Most technology-packed
  • Best blade

2024 Best irons: Easy to launch/Slower swing speed

These are the irons for golfers who need height. With today’s modern golf ball, creating proper flight widows and spin can be difficult for some players — especially those at lower speeds — and this is where technology can really help. All of these irons do everything they can to create shot-stopping trajectories and a steeper angle of descent.

Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal HL

Their story: With the JPX923 Hot Metal, Mizuno introduced “4355 nickel chromoly,” which is 35 percent stronger than the original Hot Metal material and allows for an eight-percent thinner clubface. Cup face construction works in tandem with a deep center of gravity for high launch with stopping power. Mizuno developed Hot Metal Pro, Hot Metal and Hot Metal HL (High Launch) from 175,000 real golf swings recorded via Mizuno’s Swing DNA system. JPX923 Hot Metal HL is a high launch speed cavity delivering a higher launching option for players with moderate swing speeds or aggressive shaft lean, it’s suitable for mid to high-handicap golfers.

Fitter comments:

  • “We’re talking about… people who need forgiveness, but they don’t spin it enough. They don’t get it in the air. The HL is a little little weaker-lofted, but they have the size and the forgiveness they need. It’s one of the go-tos for us.”
  • “We’ve been getting a lot of guys where it’s like, you know, the way you deliver it, you really need the loft of a, of a blade, but you’re not good enough to hit a blade. So, you know, we need to get some height. Like the slower swing speed player, aging golfer, like they don’t have 130 MPH ball speed with a seven that they can launch it at 15 degrees and still get it in the air. They gotta get that thing off the ground and up to get some distance out of it. And this thing is just, it’s so easy to get up in the air…even if we do bend other things weaker, we can’t get it as high lofted as that thing, and it just goes straight up in the air.”
  • “It’s super forgiving and it feels pretty good that. We sell more HL’s than we do standard Hot Metals. It’s such a popular golf club.”
  • “It’s a spectacular club and really is probably the best club in that high-launch category. If you take the high launch QI, you take the [Callaway Paradym] Ai Smoke HL, [Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal] HL, that’s the best one.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL

Their story: At the core of Callaway’s new Ai Paradym Smoke irons is the Ai Smart Face. With the Ai Smart Face, these irons are designed to promote exceptional distance, tight dispersion into the green, and optimal launch in a modern construction. The new shape consists of longer blade lengths, thinner toplines, and optimized sole widths in a bid to create a forgiving, yet streamlined look at address. In addition, an all-new Dynamic Sole Design features a pre-worn leading edge with variable bounce that cuts through the turf with efficiency.

Fitter comments:

  • “Compared to the standard Ai Smoke, it’s definitely launching a little bit higher. I would say blade length is a little bit longer. So, you know, it’s a little bit more forgiving a little bit easier to hit than that traditional AI Smoke. It’s gonna launch higher than Ai Smoke and spin a little bit more for that player that needs that help.”
  • “Amazing when it comes to getting the ball airborne and retaining spin. Very easy to hit and very stable through impact. Second place to Mizuno, for me.”
  • “The HL version allows for a player to play a strong lofted iron in a lightweight package that helps achieve great distance. This iron is long! The ball speeds are crazy high. This iron is great for a player who flips at it.”
  • “Even though not as light as the others, the HL gets the ball in air faster and slower speed needs that for distance”
  • “Powerful but still helps get the ball to launch at a playable angle. Generates height well with lots of speed across the face.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

TaylorMade Qi HL

Their story: With a blend of minimalistic aesthetics and advanced multi-material technology, TaylorMade’s new Qi irons aim to deliver the optimal combination of distance, accuracy and solid feel in an inviting game-improvement package. At the heart of the Qi iron is individual head optimization, organic face designs, and FLTD CG, all working in unison to help golfers minimize the right miss. With their latest irons, TaylorMade has designed the all-new Qi irons to have significantly less right bias for straighter and more accurate shots.

Fitter comments:

  • “That’s a big ass iron. But you also have a much better look than the [Stealth] HD last year. That [iron] was really shallow in the face that got the ball up great. But it just didn’t look the way some people wanted, right? They didn’t want a small face. So it’s a really good option for people.”
  • “You’re seeing some of these companies…I think they’re seeing that sometimes…a little bit of loft can be, be good, you know, but they’re combing it with heads now that are super tight off the face. You get some of those guys catching it all on the face, the thing still getting up in the air, still producing ball speed.”
  • “I would say the Qi HL, it’s like kind of top charts when it comes to…if someone’s hitting it, that thing wants to go. And I think they definitely did a good job…with the redesign of it compared to Stealth HD.”
  • “The previous generation was a little bit off-putting, you know, some, most people don’t wanna play kind of, you know, a hybrid-iron. It’s a little bit easier to hit a little bit better package…compared to the HD, the packaging is 1,000,000 bucks.”
  • “I mean…[Stealth] HD worked really good but it was very hard to…get someone to accept that they had to use it. Now at the [Qi10] HL you put that in someone’s hands, it looks good. It feels good. And they feel like, ‘I’m using a, a golfer golf club,’ you know. It’s a real battle sometimes with people…our job is performance, but they also want something that’s gonna look good in their bag.”
  • “The fact that it looks like a regular golf club is helpful. I think in that modern-day iron, it’s just lofts are getting so strong, and the ball is spinning so little off of these things that if you don’t naturally hit it super high, irons like that are just perfect for guys, they’re able to hold greens, stop it quicker. For a lot of guys, that height means more distance. So they’re actually hitting it farther with more loft and, and be able to hold a green better. And guys that maybe had a five hybrid are now getting a five iron back in their bag and it’s great.”

Ping G430 HL

Their story: Billed as Ping’s “longest iron ever”, the G430 irons combine a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to 2 more mph of ball speed, per the company. At the heart of the new addition is the PurFlex cavity badge, an innovation which features seven flex zones that allow more free bending in design to increase ball speed across the face. In combination with a lower CG, the badge aims to contribute to the solid feel and pleasing impact sound. The stronger lofts across the set resulted in the addition of a 41 degree PW to ensure proper gapping options and allowed for standard lofts in the traditional scoring wedges (45.5, 50, 54 and 58 degrees).

From the fitters:

  • “With that Alta Quick shaft, I mean, it’s just, it’s super easy to kick that thing up in the air. And what I really like about it is they don’t put flex on the shaft. We’ve had, you know, I mean, you explain to the customer like, hey, you know, you might, you know, you’re gonna need that 35-gram Alta Quick. It’s not gonna say, you know, ladies flex or whatever and no one knows.”
  • “It’s super easy to hit, super easy to launch, especially for someone who needs…that help and forgiveness.”
  • “What I like about what Ping does, they don’t just like, shove a lighter-weight shaft in the same club head. They put a lighter grip on it, they put a lighter shaft in it. So like they kind of do it the right way. It’s just an overall lighter package version of the best game improvement iron out there. So it’s you get all the forgiveness and everything else that you get with G430, but now in a total balanced package for a slower swing speed player, it’s, it’s great.”
  • “What I like about it too is with the Alta Quick 35 [shaft]. It’s essentially like a ladies golf club that doesn’t say ladies on it. So like you get that guy that swings super slow or you get like that junior boy or something like that that just, you know, I’m not, you know, especially like the kids like, I mean, he’s not playing a club that says ladies on it or it’s purple or something you can get than this and it looks just like his dad’s G430s, but it just gets up in the air and goes and it’s awesome.”
  • “The best iron in the game improvement category. High launch and packed with forgiveness on those off-center hits. It’s one of the easiest irons to hit. The HL version allows players who need a lighter package and need help with higher launch are able to achieve that with this iron.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Titleist T350

Their story: The new T350 irons are still built for maximum distance and forgiveness, but they were redesigned with a hollow-body construction that’s inspired by the T200. Like the T200, the T350 also uses Max Impact Technology behind the face to maximize speed and forgiveness, and dual-tungsten weights in the back cavity. The T350 irons are noticeably larger, and with thicker toplines, than the T200 irons for golfers who need the additional surface area and stability.

Fitter comments:

  • “The T350 is super good. They definitely cleaned it up, cleaned up that topline a little bit and made it…a little bit more compact, a little bit smaller for sure.”
  • “You know, I think is one of those irons that maybe sometimes can get overlooked. I don’t know…some guys, they think ‘Titleist,’ they can’t hit it. If someone’s in this category, it’s always a club you’re gonna have.”
  • “So like this is the first one in that model that’s had like a forged face and, and, and, and I think that just improved the feel of it. Topline to me looks a little bit cleaner and, they do a nice job of hiding the offset doesn’t look quite obnoxious when you look down at it. I don’t know if it’s like the chrome that they put or whatever, but it looks a lot cleaner at address. The iron’s always been super easy to get up in here.”
  • “That type of customer, I know they all want to do is just hit it nice and far. But we’re seeing so many guys come in that just need help getting it airborne in that moderate kind of clubhead speed category. And this thing is probably, if not the easiest, one of the easiest irons in this category to launch. And I think that’s what makes it so great.”
  • “High launch is a key component to this iron. Clean look, with reduced offset and a better look for a players game improvement iron. Players are surprised that this is a game improvement iron based on the looks and package size.”

Looking at the best fairway wood playing field for 2024, we continue to see more fairway wood options from every manufacturer. What used to be a single model release has been expanded to three — and in some cases even four — driver D.N.A.-infused models to fit specific player types.

These new fairway woods impress us with their ability to utilize new technology and construction methods to go faster, and further, while also offering never-before-seen levels of forgiveness. It’s now easier than ever to find the right one that matches your swing.

That being said, ultimately the best way to find the best fairway woods for you is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor. Best fairway woods 2024: The categories

We have broken our 2024 best fairway wood list into two categories.

  • Best fairway wood for golfers seeking forgiveness
  • Best fairway wood for golfers seeking versatility

We selected this format for fairway woods in cooperation with fitters because every golfer prioritizes one of these two elements, regardless of age, handicap, or sex. And for many golfers, forgiveness is the number one factor when selecting a fairway wood.

Most versatile fairway woods of 2024

Ping G430 Max

Ping developed Carbonfly Wrap in a bid to deliver more distance by positioning the CG closer to the face to maximize ball speed, resulting in higher, longer carries. The lightweight composite crown wraps into the heel and toe sections of the skirt, creating weight savings of 10 grams, which are reallocated to achieve the lower CG and increase ball speed. The composite also plays a role in the pleasing sound, while a tungsten backweight extends the perimeter weighting to ensure forgiveness.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max

Ai Smart Face — the centerpiece of Callaway’s Paradym Ai Smoke drivers — is also the key technology of new Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke fairway woods and hybrids. As with the drivers, the carbon chassis is lighter, allowing for 24 grams of weight to be redistributed throughout the head for enhanced launch, spin, and forgiveness. As utilized in Paradym, engineers leverage a tungsten speed cartridge to push CG low and forward.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Titleist TSR2

TSR2 fairways feature the lowest CG in Titleist history for an all-steel construction designed to create speed and launch without excessive spin. New Open Hosel Construction created space for sizable improvements to key areas of performance by removing unwanted weight high and towards the heel.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

TaylorMade Qi10 Tour

The Qi10 Tour model uses a multi-material titanium-carbon construction and offers a more compact head shape, equipped with a moveable 50-gram weight in the sole for precise weight placement. By placing the sliding weight further back in the head, golfers can achieve a higher launch and more stability, whereas placing the weight further forward helps achieve a lower-spin and more penetrating ball flight.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Titleist TSR3

Titleist’s adjustability-focused fairway wood is designed with a new, easy-to-adjust 5-position SureFit Adjustable CG Track System to fine-tune performance. It features the same Open Hosel Construction as TSR2 fairways. The TSR3’s CG has been positioned deeper, slightly lower, and closer to face center to provide easy, high launch with plenty of forgiveness.

Most forgiving fairway woods of 2024

TaylorMade Qi10 Max

The Qi10 Max fairway wood heads use the company’s “Infinity Carbon Crown” that helped free up weight to be placed lower in the heads, helping achieve higher inertia and an enlarged face profile to boost ball speeds across their faces. Compared to the standard Qi10 model, the Qi10 Max has a larger front-to-back shape and shallower profile that’s designed for increased forgiveness and playability.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Cobra Darkspeed Max

Cobra’s draw-biased model is built for the player who needs forgiveness. Depending on the weight configuration, either greater forgiveness or more draw bias can be targeted. The draw-biased Max model is the most forgiving in the lineup. Here the weights are 12 and three grams and are situated in the rear and heel of the club to achieve the desired launch and ball flight.

In addition to our three swing speed categories, however, we’ve also asked our fitters for their recommendations for the most forgiving drivers for players who prioritize forgiveness above all else.

Last year, we pointed out that we continue to exist in an era of not just maximizing distance but also minimizing the penalty of common misses for each player with the driver. Discretionary weight within the driver is also at an all-time high, so engineers can provide the widest range of performance characteristics in the metalwood era. This is only more true in 2024, with the pursuit of massive MOI (moment of inertia) driving several manufacturers’ offerings. In short, manufacturers are focusing more on forgiveness, and (with respect to MOI) the current crop of drivers is doubtless the most forgiving.

Of course, custom fitting is essential to help you see results on every swing you make, and we believe the best way to find your personal best driver is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor.

That said, many golfers don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work to help you narrow down your short list of best drivers as you test out options for your best driver. We’re doing as much as we can to help you sort out your short list of the most forgiving drivers for testing.

Most forgiving driver of 2024

Ping G430 Max 10K

Ping touts the effects of a 28-gram fixed tungsten backweight working in combination with its 460cc multi-material head in achieving a 10,000 g-cm² measurement. Five grams of weight is saved from a lighter Carbonfly Wrap crown allowing for weight to be pushed to the perimeter of the club for increased forgiveness. The head profile is the largest in Ping history, pushed to the limits of heel-toe and front-back USGA restrictions.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max

Drawing on the swing dynamics of thousands of real golfers, Callaway developed an all-new Ai Smart Face for its Paradym Ai Smoke drivers. Swing speed, club delivery, and face orientation prior to impact were considered to create club faces catered to optimal launch and tighter dispersion. Engineers targeted face design virtually everywhere across the face to leverage micro deflections for optimal spin on off-center shots struck anywhere on the face. Aimed at the widest swath of the fitting bell curve, Paradym Ai Smoke Max is the only driver in the lineup with an adjustable perimeter weight. According to the company, this allows up to 19 yards of shot shape adjustment.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

TaylorMade Qi10 Max

TaylorMade targets forgiveness, rather than distance, with its Qi10 family of drivers, thanks to the combined effects of a re-engineered Infinity Crown, perimeter mass distribution, and modified head shapes. The undisputed star of TaylorMade’s Quest for Inertia — the company’s bid for “max forgiveness and max accuracy” while continuing to deliver top-of-the-line ball speeds. The largest profile in the lineup, the Max features an incredible MOI of 10,000 g-cm².

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Titleist TSR2

TSR is the next generation of the Titleist Speed Project that began more than seven years ago with the TS series and continued with TSi models in 2020. There are three models in the TSR line, which began tour seeding in June. TSR2 is a high-launch, low-spin “max” driver, balancing speed and stability that is designed for the player who makes contact across the face.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Ping G430 Max

With a shallower and thinner VFT forged face design, Ping engineers sought to add speed and distance without undermining an element Ping drivers have been known for: forgiveness. For slower-swing-speed golfers, G430 Max can be custom built with lighter head weights. G430 Max is suitable for the widest segment of the fitting bell curve and features a 25-gram, high-density tungsten moveable back weight (±8 yards of shot shaping).

We’re doing as much as we can to help you, short of a proper fitting!

Best driver of 2024: The categories

We have again broken our 2024 best drivers list into four total categories. Three are swing speed-based and the other forgiveness.

  • Best driver for faster swing speeds 106+ mph
  • Best driver for swing speeds 95-105 mph
  • Best driver for slower swing speeds <94 mph
  • Best driver most forgiving (coming tomorrow!)

We select this format because every golfer fits into one of these categories regardless of age, handicap, or gender, and for a lot of golfers, forgiveness is the number one factor when selecting a driver.

When we reconfigured our Best Driver process in 2021, we reached out to our trusted fitters to discuss how they sort through the endless head combinations available to golfers. Time after time, swing speed and forgiveness were the highest-ranked choices, after that, it comes down to adjustability to fit individual players and their trends.

This year, we have again worked internally to craft a survey that allowed the fitters to be honest—we want the truth just as much as you do, and to prevent anyone from feeling they couldn’t be, we allowed all of the results and quotes to remain anonymous.

Again, we can’t thank the fitters enough for their time, and we hope that in your search for your best driver for 2024, we can help you find it!

BEST DRIVER FOR 106 MPH AND ABOVE

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond

Drawing on the swing dynamics of thousands of real golfers, Callaway developed an all-new Ai Smart Face for its Paradym Ai Smoke drivers. Swing speed, club delivery, and face orientation prior to impact were considered to create club faces catered to optimal launch and tighter dispersion. Engineers targeted face design virtually everywhere across the face to leverage micro deflections for optimal spin on off-center shots struck anywhere on the face. Triple Diamond, Callaway’s tour/better player option is the most compact and neutral-to-fade biased in the Ai Smoke lineup, as would be expected. A 14-gram weight can be moved from front to back for spin reduction and to the rear for workability.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • As long as the golfer is finding the center of the clubface consistently at this swing speed, the AI Smoke Triple Diamond is an outstanding performer. Even misses slightly off-center aren’t penalized much distance-wise wise, and the head geometry does a great job of keeping the ball near the intended line.
  • For a players driver to fly this straight it is a no-brainer. Very rarely do I see high-toe and low-heel strikes fly so similarly. This is the most forgiving and longest “players driver.”
  • Simply put: fast and straight. This is the most impressive head I have seen on off-center strikes for a “players driver.” It sits as the best driver I have seen since the Ping G400 LST. The look, sound and feel check any box that you could have. It could be brought up in GOAT conversations.
  • We have gotten to a point where technology in drivers is so good across the board, it’s hard for a driver to stand out. The Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Triple Diamond does just that. It’s consistently the fastest face in most of my fittings.
  • Triple Diamond has a big old face. It sits a little bit more open so the guys with speed. It almost looks like it has a bit of loft to it, which is nice. So if you take an eight-degree Triple Diamond and you set it down, you’re like, man, this looks like it sits like a 10.5. So I think confidence-wise you’ll fit a lot more.

Titleist TSR3

TSR is the next generation of the Titleist Speed Project that began more than six years ago with the TS series and continued with TSi models in 2020. Mid-launch, mid-spin TSR3 is the more adjustable option in a tour-preferred shape. It’s engineered for playability and precise CG positioning (thanks to a reimagined SureFit Adjustable CG Track System) and an improved sweet spot.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • Produces amazing ball speed for fast swing speeds while still offering great forgiveness. Still one of the best drivers out there for higher swing speeds, especially for those players who miss on the heel.
  • The number one driver used on the PGA Tour. Don’t sleep on this ball speed machine! The classic pear shape is as clean-looking as it gets. It’s stable across the face for being a low spin head.
  • Great product for the player looking for ball speed retention across the face while having a traditional look. Rear weight track allows players to really fine-tune the swing flaws.
  • The best “players driver” still remains a top pick for fitters. The feel, looks and sound are exactly what you’d expect from a Titleist but packs the speed to compete with the top dogs.
  • If you and I are chatting best drivers of 2035 I still think we’re gonna reminisce about TSR lineup. And also I think TSR three is just gonna go down as a, you know, a World Golf Hall of Fame driver. it’s, it’s so good. The amount of interchange of, like, interchangeable weight, weight moving that weight track actually does something because it’s wide enough and you can bash it out of the heel.

TaylorMade Qi10 LS

TaylorMade targets forgiveness, rather than distance, with its Qi10 family of drivers, thanks to the combined effects of a re-engineered Infinity Crown, perimeter mass distribution, and modified head shapes. The LS takes Qi10 Max technology puts it in a “better player” package. Qi10 LS is a more compact profile with interior mass distribution engineered for lower spin and launch. Aiding in this effort is an 18-gram sliding weight near the face that utilizes a new, more aerodynamic weight system. Weight is moved low and forward for greater MOI in the LS while keeping the club low-spin.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • Beauty and power. Clean look harkening back to the TaylorMade TP days of the mid-2000’s but all the technology of today. The weight adjustability is a huge bonus.
  • FAST with tons of adjustability and a slightly open face angle.
  • This was a big improvement on the previous generation. This flat-flying, low-spin bomber is great for a a player who struggles with spin and needs to lower launch and spin.
  • Very few drivers can compete with the ball speed delivered by this driver.

Cobra Darkspeed LS

A re-engineered PWR-Bridge and weighting system, PWRSHELL, and H.O.T. Face Technologies are at the heart of the Cobra Darkspeed LS line. With the most compact profile in the lineup (albeit with a higher crown peak), Darkspeed LS is designed for high-clubhead-speed players seeking lower spin with shot shape control. For the Darkspeed LS, three weight ports with two three-gram weights and one 12-gram weight. Two ports are situated in the front of the club and one in the rear for players to dial in draw/fade or preference spin versus forgiveness.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • Ball speeds are elevated from previous models while improving look, sound and feel.
  • Cobra is the most underrated driver company every year. The Aerojet was shockingly long a straight and the new Darkspeed LS has taken it to another level.
  • It is shocking how straight the ball flight is.
  • This driver tests the fastest for head speed and provides very good low spin consistency and a great sound.
  • This is the fastest driver we have tested by far and is the dark horse that most people will sleep on. Once dialed in it is a monster driver with workability over last years product and more forgiveness as well.

Ping G430 LST

With a shallower and thinner VFT forged face design, Ping engineers sought to add speed and distance without undermining an element Ping drivers have been known for: forgiveness. Exclusive to the G430 LST, lightweight composite crown-covering Carbonfly Wrap technology is the major innovation in the series. It’s an eight-layer, one-piece composite covering the crown to save weight (four grams) and lower CG, creating a lower-spin, higher-MOI driver.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • Easily a top choice for last year, the story doesn’t change this year. The G430 LST is as stable as stable gets. For the guy who really pounds it. Much improved sound and feel from the G425 line.
  • Great driver that is forgiving with a ton of adjustable options to dial in direction, lie angle, and lower spin.
  • The most forgiving low spin driver on the market.
  • Relatively forgiving head with the shape of a players head that doesn’t lose the speed battle very often either.
  • The 9-degree head in the LST is such a spin killer. It goes really low and spins like zero. For that medium trajectory player, they can increase their launch angles and keep spin the same. You’re able to play more loft and not have spin go up. From a fitter’s standpoint, it gives us a little bit more leeway. In the low-spin option, that head truly is the most forgiving. I don’t know what Ping does, but they’ve got an ability to make drivers ridiculously easy to hit straight, and its up to their engineers to try to make them efficient and fast. The LST does an awesome job of that.

On Tour with Andrew Tursky

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond: Callaway staffers such as Xander Schauffele, Adam Hadwin and Nicolai Hojgaard have been quick adopters into the new Ai Smoke Triple Diamond driver, which is a spin-killing weapon that also offers forgiveness, a modern look, and a compact head shape.

Some Callaway driver users have also opted for the Triple Diamond S head, which has a slightly more compact look at address, or the Triple Diamond Max head, which offers slightly more forgiveness and a touch higher spin, but the Triple Diamond head remains the most popular model for company staffers on the PGA Tour.

Xander Schauffele’s driver.

Titleist TSR3: The Titleist TSR3 blends good looks, forgiveness, workability, weight adjustability, and spin reduction into one, glossy black head that seems to fit everyone from 12-handicappers to the world’s best players.

PGA Tour players such as Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Cam Young and Tom Kim are currently using the TSR3 model.

Justin Thomas’ driver.

Golfers that have used Titleist drivers in the past will find familiarity with the look, feel and sound of the TSR3 driver, but the new model provides a leap in distance and forgiveness compared to any Titleist predecessor that came before.

TaylorMade Qi10 LS: TaylorMade’s Qi10 LS is arguably the lowest-spinning driver of 2024, and it’s currently being played by the likes of Tiger Woods, Tommy Fleetwood, and Kurt Kitayama.

The driver is so low-spinning, actually, that players such as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler have opted for the Qi10 core model for a touch of added forgiveness and spin.

Scottie Scheffler’s driver.

If you’re a high-speed golfer looking to lower your spin rates off the tee, the logical place to start your testing is with the Qi10 LS driver. But don’t forget about the Qi10 core model, either, since both are being played by the world’s best TaylorMade staffers.

Cobra Darkspeed LS: Cobra’s new Darkspeed LS combines the stealthy looks and forgiveness of the Darkspeed platform, but provides serious spin-reducing performance with the LS head. The long-hitting Gary Woodland currently opts for the LS model. Rickie Fowler also started out 2024 using the Darkspeed LS head, but has since switched to the slightly more forgiving Darkspeed X head to help with his mis-hits.

Rickie Fowler’s driver.

For high-speed players, the Cobra Darkspeed LS driver is one of the most forgiving low-spin options on the market.

Ping G430 LST: Ping has always been known to produce some of the most forgiving drivers available on the market, but its 430 LST model has proven to be one of the lowest-spinning models, too.

Austin Eckroat recently won the Cognizant Classic with a Ping G430 LST in the bag, and joining him on the list of fellow G430 LST users are Tony Finau, Corey Conners, David Lingmerth and Taylor Moore.

The G430 LST is a certified spin-killer with forgiveness, but don’t sleep on the more forgiving G430 10K model, either, as it’s garnered significant attention from PGA Tour players in recent months.

BEST DRIVERS FOR 95-105 MPH

Fitter notes

  • Callaway just continues to push the forgiveness and speed buttons, they are easy to hit and mishits go long and straight.
  • Callaway is winning the driver battle in my opinion. Great feel and great numbers.
  • Great combination of speed and forgiveness. Not the fastest and not the most forgiving but a great in-the-middle option.
  • All around excellent performer this year. Straight and long, a good combination.

Fitter notes

  • The best in this category in terms of ball speed, spin, and stability. The TSR2 has been awesome for over a year and still reigns supreme in this category.
  • We think this is the best combination of ball speed and dispersion in the marketplace. It has been since launching in fall of 2022. Titleist hit a home run with these drivers.
  • It fits a huge, huge variety of players. Huge upgrade over TSi, in my opinion. The 2 was slow and it didn’t go as fast as the 3. It was a great driver, but it was a step down. This thing has all the power the TSR3 has. It looks awesome. But they didn’t sacrifice forgiveness. It’s great for that traditionalist who likes a clean, classic look but needs forgiveness out of it. And their adjustable cog allows us to fit a wide variety of players. I love this driver.
  • This thing has been a staple on tour for a while now. The stability and forgiveness on off-center hits with this is great to not have a huge kick up in spin but still maintain good ball speed. Guys are seeing they can miss this driver on the toe or heal and the spin isn’t going to drastically go up or down compared to previous models
  • TSR2 got the biggest upgrade in the TSR family over the previous model. Nice change in looks, but the increase in speed was much needed. This is equally as long as TSR3, just with more forgiveness.

TaylorMade Qi10

TaylorMade targets forgiveness, rather than distance, with its Qi10 family of drivers, thanks to the combined effects of a re-engineered Infinity Crown, perimeter mass distribution, and modified head shapes. Living between the Max and LS models regarding launch and spin, Qi10 is slightly smaller than Qi10 Max with a more traditional profile. It features a sole weight closer to the center of the face and a more centered rear weight for a more neutral flight bias.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • The Qi10 model allows my clients to produce high ball speeds without having too little spin. The driver produces a nice ball flight and excellent carry numbers.
  • TaylorMade’s best driver in a few years. This head is going to fit a huge percentage of golfers.
  • Really strong product that subtly helps a player not hook as much. Ball speed is there, as usual. Possibly the best option for the habitual high toe striker.
  • Don’t sleep on the standard head. Stable across the face with Mid-spin and launch. A lot of tour players are switching to this head due to the consistency in launch and spin.
  • Now we’re seeing Rory playing in it and, you know, like I said, it’s kind of the same thing. I think it’s actually gonna probably fit a fairly wide group. You talk about like that mid-to-lower spin, profile like somebody that needs to keep spin that are higher, higher speed guys. I think that’s gonna be a perfect driver for them.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • Incredibly stable head, maintains ball speeds across the face for ideal launch characteristics.
  • Extremely versatile driver head for a wide range of players. Ability to lighten the head also helps.
  • Forgiveness and ball speed going back to the G400 days. Great look and the familiar sound of a Ping. Again, adjustability from the adapter to the rear weighting is awesome.
  • The ability to crank it all the way up to 13.5 degrees when need is a major help. Pushes launch up without sacrificing ball speed.
  • The Max head from Ping has always been one of, if not the best driver on the market. The G430 version is no different. Forgiveness that nobody else can touch along with great ball speed and surprisingly lowish spin.

Fitter notes

  • The closest thing to point-and-shoot that I have ever seen in a driver. Extremely forgiving while still maintaining a lower spin rate.
  • The best driver Ping has made, yes, I know how big of a statement that is.
  • This driver is incredible. For players to tend to spin the ball too low it is absolutely cheating. The driver simply wants to fly straight. We’ve seen the balls speeds increased from the LST head as well as the spin being 2-300 RPM’s higher. For guys with speed that spin it low, there’s really no reason not to be hitting this driver.
  • This driver has performed will across all swing speeds. As stated before its cheating when it comes to left/right dispersion.
  • Guys who struggle with any sort of consistent strike pattern, like it’s gonna do a good job of keeping it in front of them. I think it’s a little bit more of a go-to when you get somebody who hits it all over the face, just to help them hit it straighter…

BEST DRIVERS FOR 94 MPH AND BELOW

Ping G430 Max 10K

Ping touts the effects of a 28-gram fixed tungsten backweight working in combination with its 460cc multi-material head in achieving a 10,000 g-cm² measurement. Five grams of weight is saved from a lighter Carbonfly Wrap crown allowing for weight to be pushed to the perimeter of the club for increased forgiveness. The head profile is the largest in Ping history, pushed to the limits of heel-toe and front-back USGA restrictions.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • Straight & forgiving with no sacrifice in ball speed. The fact that some of their tour staff have gone into this head SCREAMS the performance is real.
  • The most forgiving driver on the market. You get the forgiveness of the Max head and LST in one driver. Low launch and low spin with really good stability across those face on those off-center hits.
  • This is the driver to beat this year. So much forgiveness and great for any swing speed.
  • Very forgiving and comes off of the face well.
  • It is the best driver on the market hands down, and I don’t care if you swing 75 or 105. I swear you can hit that thing anywhere on the face and it just performs the exact same.

Fitter notes

  • Maximum speed and forgiveness. Tends to still spin low enough for optimum launch conditions.
  • The Max is doing the best out of the 3 heads for me. It has a ton of forgiveness while still keeping spin numbers down and maximizing distance.
  • Very good driver to maintain ball speeds on off-center strikes.
  • Ultra forgiving with incredible ball speeds. This thing spins well and goes straight. TM is onto something with the driver.

Fitter notes

  • Probably the most user-friendly new driver on the market for 2024. Launches nice and high, moveable weight track to dial in the ideal CG along with the adapter. Great looks, a slightly easier face to turn over, and rock-solid feel that’s easy to launch.
  • Some of the highest ball speeds in testing, very easy to square up, plenty of adjustability.
Very forgiving head that looks great at address and with the slide weight you can help directional misses and great ball speed here as well.
  • The forgiveness across the face allowing more ball speed on misses plus the adjustable rear weighting track is outstanding. Clean look at address with the carbon top and better top line framing the ball.

Cobra Darkspeed Max

A re-engineered PWR-Bridge and weighting system, PWRSHELL, and H.O.T. Face Technologies are at the heart of the Cobra Darkspeed LS line. With the most compact profile in the lineup (albeit with a higher crown peak), Darkspeed LS is designed for high-clubhead-speed players seeking lower spin with shot shape control. The Max, Cobra’s draw-biased model is built for the player who needs forgiveness. Depending on the weight configuration, either greater forgiveness or more draw bias can be targeted.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • Cobra drivers keep getting better, very easy to hit and forgiving without sacrificing control.
  • Really great looking, all blacked out is really eye-pleasing. The Darkspeed Max is fast and very stable through the hitting zone.
  • We love the adjustability Cobra offers with the sole weights in this design. The driver is sleek and fast while providing great forgiveness.
  • Great forgiveness, good launch/spin profile for most players, and enough adjustability to make it fit most swing profiles.

Titleist TSR1

According to Titleist, the new 460cc TSR1 driver weighs a total of 40 grams lighter than the TSR2 thanks to a lighter headweight, 40-gram stock shaft, and a lighter stock grip. Like the other TSR drivers, the TSR1 has Multi-Plateau Variable Face Thickness to boost speed on off-center hits, and the CG (center of gravity) is placed rearward in the heads to increase launch and height.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Fitter notes

  • The Titleist TSR1 is an excellent option for the player who needs to increase their carry distance. The lightness of the head allows players with less club speed to produce higher launch angles without increasing spin.
  • This lighter-weight head is great for reducing swing weight for slower players and doesn’t sacrifice ball speed. Much like its siblings in the TSR family this driver launches and spins well while producing awesome ball speed.
  • Easy to hit, easy to launch. Good ball speed without spinning too much. Looks and feels great for a niche market.
  • Fantastic option for those looking for a little help with creating speed through lighter equipment. Many of the lighter options on the market have a pre-built-in draw bias. Many players out there who want to test lighter equipment but don’t fight a slice. This is the best option on the market for that scenario.
  • The TSR1 offers a little less headweight which can help dramatically reduce the weight of the club and ease the user experience. While a lighter club doesn’t always offer more speed, it can dramatically improve a player’s balance through the swing and help them hit the ball better. Titleist remains on top.

3. L.A.B. Directed Force 2.1 (5.74%)

What L.A.B. says: “Our Founder is Bill Presse, a former mini-tour player who had the idea to create a putter that would allow him to drastically simplify his stroke. He wanted to be able to count on a square putter face every time, which led him to invent Lie Angle Balance. Bill also wanted to create a putter head that would give him as much forgiveness as possible, so he developed the radical shape of the DF 2.1 as a way to maximize consistency on off-center hits. Yes, it looks like a branding iron… but it works!”

Best fairway wood of 2023: The top 5

1. Titleist TSR2 (19.86%)

What Titleist says: “Go low to get more. Titleist TSR2 Fairways feature our lowest CG ever for speed and launch without creating excessive backspin. A new Open Hosel Construction contributes to a powerful new sound and feel that make TSR2 an instant favorite for many players.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • DJ07: “Have both a Paradym Heavenwood and TSR2 3W. I love both of them, but the TSR2 is far more consistent for me for a club that I historically have struggled to be consistent with. Upgraded from TSi2, and the subtle changes like full scorelines across the face and shape/weight changes have given me a noticeable increase in ball speed and distance.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the fairway wood in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Titleist TSR2 here.

2. Ping G430 Max (17.49%)

What Ping says: “You can size up long approach shots with 100% confidence that your G430 fairway will get you home. We’re introducing Carbonfly Wrap technology to deliver more distance by positioning the CG closer to the force line to maximize ball speed, resulting in higher, longer carries.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • eric61: “My confidence with the G430 Max 3 wood is really high right now. I’ve been reaching more par 5s in two than ever before. It is a spinnier head than many of its competitors — I’m around 3500 RPMs on a Trackman on good strikes. However, I wanted my 3 wood to be a club I really felt like I could trust and control off the tee, and this gives me that, while also being able to stop on greens — which I’m actually hitting with it sometimes! The 7 wood is just super straight and really versatile, good out of anything but the fluffiest of lies (where I feel like, because of the shallow face, I could slide it right under the ball).”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the fairway wood in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Ping G430 Max here.

3. TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus (13.92%)

What TaylorMade says: “Reachable par 5s. Tight par 4s. Long par 3s. Bring ’em on. With a massive 50g sliding weight that creates three fairway woods in one, the all-new Stealth 2 Plus Fairway is like a cheat code. Letting you control launch, spin and distance with a few twists of the wrench.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • halfsumo “Stealth 2 Plus. Best sound and feel on the market. Great shaping. Long. Easy to launch. Best adjustability on the market.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the fairway wood in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus here.

4. Titleist TSR3 (8.83%)

What Titleist says: “Dial in your performance with the ultimate in adjustability. TSR3 Fairways feature a new, easier to adjust 5-position SureFit Adjustable CG Track System that offers both a wider adjustment range and greater precision. A deeper CG improves accuracy.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • g_nw: “TSR3 for me… shape, consistency, adjustability and sound… all amazing for me. My launch numbers are the same, every day. I own 3w and 5w and I’ll have these in the bag for a super long time. Ventus TR Black 7X and 8X respectively, loft turned down a bit.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the fairway wood in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Titleist TSR3 here.

5. Callaway Paradym (7.3%)

What Callaway says: “A total Paradym shift in distance and forgiveness, featuring progressive shaping, and our most robust offering that fits a wide range of player types. This is the model for golfers who want a high launching fairway wood with a neutral ball flight.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the fairway wood in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Callaway Paradym here.

Best driver of 2023: The top 5

1. Titleist TSR3 (20.22%)

What Titleist says: “If you are a player with a consistent impact location, then Titleist TSR3 Driver is your ticket to maximum driving performance. The new Speed Ring Face Technology creates a focused point of pure speed that can be precision-tuned to match your point of contact.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • Blakehall: “Nothing has been able to give me the huge ball speed and good dispersion balance like the TSR3.”
  •  PigBimpin: Titleist TSR3….best adjustable sleeve in the market in my opinion.”
  • Kaitsu68: “Titleist  TSR3. First time in many many years I am confident with driver. Makes a big difference.”
  • GlennQNYC: “Titleist TSR3 won my fitting and has proven to be super impressive in play. Miss hits are surprisingly long too.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the driver in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Titleist TSR3 here.

2. Titleist TSR2 (14.74%)

What Titleist says: “Titleist TSR2 Driver is slimmed down and ramped up. For players who make contact across the entire surface of the face, it combines our most significant CG shift with a new Multi-Plateau Variable Face Thickness design to boost speed across the face. All within a cleaner, refined shape that inspires total player confidence.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • Rkeffer: “Titleist TSR2 with Ventus Blue TR 6S has been the winner for me. I demo’d all of this years offerings and it was the best combo of distance and forgiveness. Added plus that it looks and sounds amazing.”
  •  Philly2kUK: I voted tsr2. It’s ridiculously forgiving and I tried all the other clubs but it beat them all hands down for forgiveness whilst being long.”
  • ABuckley11: “Love my new TSR2!…I’m loving my wood set up with a TSR2 9.0 with a Ventus Black TR 7X”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the driver in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Titleist TSR2 here.

3. Ping G430 Max (12.5%)

What Ping says: “We took the game’s most forgiving driver (that also ranks as one of the longest) and made it even longer, while producing a more pleasing sound. A new face-design optimization leads to increased flexing for a big distance gain, and a 25-gram moveable backweight positions the CG to influence shot shape.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • Multipass613: “Ping G430 MAX. Total game changer for me, fairways hit up, average distance up, longest drives up. Less penalties, punch outs from trees, and nerves on par 5’s, it’s a winner!”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the driver in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Ping G430 Max here.

4. Ping G430 LST (10.67%)

What Ping says: “If you generate a lot of clubhead speed and rely on a more penetrating trajectory, the 440cc LST accelerates ball speed with reduced spin, key contributors being a new Carbonfly Wrap and a newly optimized face featuring Spinsistency, combining for longer drives with a more pleasing impact experience.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • MyShortGameSucks: “What the Ping LST gives me is amazing forgiveness and consistency which results in a lot of confidence standing on the tee. My bad swings with the Ping are still surprisingly long and playable… At the end of that day those playable bad swings are what saves the score and I’m down from 5-6 to 2 this year.”
  •  Craze-e: “I voted Ping G430 LST as it has helped me hit a flight window I have never been able to hit before…. We have never had it so good though, there really is something for everyone and it does go to prove a point that fitting is key.”
  • Justinpmc: “Ping G430 LST 9 degrees with an Oban Tour Limited Blue 05 flex. My first Ping driver and it’s a beast. High launch low spin and so easy to hit. When I tested I was getting 2-3 more mph ball speed than tsr3.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the driver in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Ping G430 LST here.

5. Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond (9.55%)

What Callaway says: “The Paradym Triple Diamond Driver is a compact, 450cc shape designed for better players who want to work the ball. It’s the lowest spinning and lowest launching Paradym model with a neutral ball flight.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • JimmyD: “Paradym Triple Diamond has everything in a driver I want so been playing most of the year. Size, shape, feel & sound are ideal for me. Super long and very forgiving, especially important as I begin to show and feel my years.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the driver in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond here.

Best irons in golf of 2023: Best blades https://www.golfwrx.com/711376/best-irons-in-golf-of-2023-best-blades/ https://www.golfwrx.com/711376/best-irons-in-golf-of-2023-best-blades/#comments Mon, 10 Apr 2023 14:38:37 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=711376 At GolfWRX, to determine the 2023 best irons, we have compiled an expert panel of fitters to help you find out which of 2023 irons is best for your game. We’re seeing new technology, more technology packed into the cavity of a club, catering toward combo sets, more consistency across the face, game improvement irons that really improve your game, and increased model segmentation against a backdrop of a few models that work well for wide sections of the fitting bell curve.

Ultimately the best way to find your personal iron set is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders—so at GolfWRX, we have done a lot of the work for you.

We are in the era of not just maximizing distance but also minimizing the penalty of common misses for each player — this applies to irons just as much as it does with any other club in the bag. Best irons of 2023: How we did it

Before starting the process of building our best iron survey, we reached out to our trusted fitters to discuss how they sort through the endless number of iron options available to golfers. The consensus was clear—the best fitters in the world see all the options available in the marketplace, analyze their performance traits, and pull from that internal database of knowledge and experience like a supercomputer when they are working with a golfer.

It’s essentially a huge decision tree derived from experience and boiled down to a starting point of options—and it has nothing to do with a handicap!

Modern iron sets are designed into player categories that overlap the outdated “what’s your handicap?” model, and at GolfWRX we believe it was important to go beyond handicap and ask specific questions about the most crucial performance elements fitters are looking at to help golfers find the best set of irons for them. From overall performance to shotmaking, to helping players achieve better trajectories and speed, we strived to ask the right questions.

These are the best iron categories we have developed to help you the reader determine what rankings are most important for your swing and game.

Best irons of 2023: The categories

Best irons of 2023: Meet the fitters

2023 Best irons: Best blades

This is by far the most straightforward category because it is defined by a single style of club — the blade AKA the muscle back or MB for short. Although modern variations offer a lot more playability than they did decades ago, blades are still defined by their workability, compact shaping, and lower ball flight. If you are looking for the ultimate test or just prefer something in the more traditional vein, these are for you.

Titleist 620 MB

Their story: The 620 MB offers ideal turf interaction throughout the set thanks to more camber and a tweaked leading edge. In addition to the sole tweaks, the blade length is progressive from the longest iron to the shortest and the transition is so smooth that unless you set clubs next to each other, it’s quite difficult to notice. The final design element is the face height progression which transitions from more shallow to tall in the pitching wedge to offer the greatest control over ball flight.

From the fitters:

  • “It usually comes down to the look and feel with the 620 MB, and they are tough to beat. They are very soft and responsive while offering good turf interaction.”
  • “Classic look. Keep it simple. This is an iron catered to the traditionalist.”
“A super classic look. Probably the ultimate shot shaping iron for the golfer who wants to bend it like Beckham on the golf course.”
  • “Still our best selling blade. I’m not sure if it’s the performance or the simplicity of the look, but this is just what that blade player is looking for.”

Mizuno Pro 221

Their story: The Mizuno Pro 221 is a new muscleback iron inspired by iconic Mizuno blades of the past. The Pro 221 irons have been bevelled for the appearance of a shorter face profile and narrower top line but without loss of mass in the upper blade. The 221’s are more compact in the scoring irons than their predecessors while also featuring Mizuno’s shortest CG/shaft axis, which is consistent from 3-iron to PW, in design to allow for controlled shot shaping through the set. Grain Flow Forged in Hiroshima, Japan, they feature a soft copper underlay in a bid to provide a classic, smooth Mizuno feel at impact.

From the fitters:

  • “Obviously, with Mizuno, the feel is always the big thing. If someone wants to hit a blade, this is usually the first club I pull.”
  • “One of the easiest blade sales out there if someone comes in looking for a blade. The look is safe (in a good way). Everything you’d expect out of a Mizuno blade but more forgiving than you would expect. Whatever they’re doing with center of gravity, they’re easier to hit than blades used to be. Definitely wins in the ‘feel’ category.”
  • “A true Mizuno blade. The copper underlay. The look. The feel. So Mizuno. When people think about Mizuno, you think about the MP-29, MP-33. The 221 is a good throwback to those with a modern look. A perfect blade with no gimmicks.”

Miura MB-101

Their story: The muscle shape is much more organic and rounded to go along with the new sole design that greatly improves turf interaction. The other part of the iron that has gone through a tremendous change, thanks to Shinei and Yoshitaka Muira, is the transition from the hosel to the topline. This is, for the most discerning player, the telltale sign of a well-designed club: The hosel should look like it almost melts into the topline of the club, and with the new Muira MB-101 iron, you get exactly that.

From the fitters:

  • “One of the most beautiful sets of irons, for sure.”
  • “As far as pure workability goes the Miura MB-101 is king of the hill. Many tour players over the years have played Miura irons when they don’t have club contracts.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Cobra King MB

Their story: A key to the enhanced forgiveness and overall performance of Cobra’s new Tour iron are CNC undercuts in the back cavity of each iron, which allow weight to be repositioned from high center to lower center and heel and toe areas of the clubhead, in design to create improved launch conditions and more forgiveness on off center hits. These cavities progress from deeper in the long irons for enhanced stability, to shallower in the short irons for enhanced control.

From the fitters:

  • “With that satin finish, when guys are looking for a blade, this is always one we pull. Easy to combo and great feel. A good classic blade look.”
  • “As sexy as a blade can look. Rounded. Looks like a traditional blade. Would look good mounted on you wall. You can combo these with the CBs.”
  • “Incredibly easy to hit for a blade iron. Many players like to go with the MB in the “scoring” irons and the CB in the long irons for a bit more forgiveness and launch.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

Callaway Apex MB

Their story: The Callaway Apex MB is forged from 1025 carbon steel with a classic shape that is similar to other blade irons from Callaway’s past, but this time with a slightly narrower sole and less offset. Another improvement is the 20V grooves ensure optimal spin control in and out of the rough. The centrally located weight screw in the back of the head allows Callaway builders to maintain the precise center of gravity locations when adding or removing weight from the irons—it’s not a new idea, but it’s one that is key to allowing the irons to be dialed into spec for each golfer.

From the fitters:

  • “A little different with the weight in the back, but still looks great, a nice thin topline. Looks good, feels good.”
  • “A modern blade with the weight port in the back, and it’s nice to be able to adjust the weight if you need to. Strike location is a little more in the center. Distinctly Callaway in look and shape. Gives the blade guy who isn’t looking for a throwback a great option for look, sound, feel, and performance.”
  • “The weight port in the back positions the center of gravity directly behind the ball to give the player precision and control over the launch and shape of shots.”

Best irons of 2023: The categories

Best irons of 2023: Meet the fitters

2023 Best irons: Top overall performers

From the fitters:

  • “From Z585 to ZX5 was a huge bump in performance, and this one picks up where ZX5 left off. It fits such a wide array of golfers — it looks good enough a mid-low single digit will play it, and the guy who is a 12-15 can play it. Awesome iron.”
  • “I’m a big believer in the V-Sole. For high-speed guys who want a little forgiveness and are steep, it just doesn’t stick in the ground. Super soft and high launching. Not a ton of offset. It’s also been a good fit for moderate to high handicappers.”
  • “We’ve fit a scary amount of these. They’ve refined the sole over previous generations so it works for a variety of attack angles. Good ball speeds. Players still aren’t look at this club as much as they should be. Great to combo with the ZX7 Mk II.”
  • “Like the old 745 in feel. I find the V-sole a little more prominent. They’ve cleaned up the shaping. The best combo iron with ZX7. Not as clickly as the previous generation. The PureFrame in the back has made a huge difference with the sound. Launches high with a ton of control.”

Ping G430

Their story: Billed as Ping’s “longest iron ever”, the G430 irons combine a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to 2 more mph of ball speed, per the company. At the heart of the new addition is the PurFlex cavity badge, an innovation which features seven flex zones that allow more free bending in design to increase ball speed across the face. In combination with a lower CG, the badge aims to contribute to the solid feel and pleasing impact sound.

From the fitters:

  • “Hyper 17-5 face adding speed, along with a new badge design to help with additional speed and forgiveness, makes this iron a home run.”
  • “They continue to make this iron look and feel better. The only issue I had with G425 in comparison with other distance irons, it just went shorter. With a little bit of a bump in loft this year, distance-wise, it’s right there with anything else. And it doesn’t look like a golfer that’s built for a 20-handicap. It looks really good at setup with the way they’re able to hide offset and keep a thin topline.”
  • “It’s awesome. We told Ping you could probably repaint the G425, it was performing so well. They said the G430 would be better and they did. I think G430 is the line of the year. They’ve done everything right. Feels good, looks good. Goes a little higher and a little straighter. The iron does everything G425 did but a little bit better. They’ve nailed it.”
  • “These are hands down the most eye-appealing game improvement iron on the market. The smaller, compact shape with the added forgiveness is great for the higher handicap players.”
  • “G430 improves upon the already great G425 in every way. Higher, straighter and farther, and also better sounding and feeling.”

Callaway Paradym

Their story: Industry-leading A.I. face technology is applied to a high-strength Forged 455 Face, creating Callaway’s most powerful forged iron face ever. Each face is uniquely optimized for more speed, higher launch, and increased spin consistency. The all-new Hollow Body design features Speed Frame construction for added stiffness to the body and support for the high-strength Forged 455 Face Cup. This unique construction is the catalyst that stabilizes a thinner face in design for incredibly fast ball speeds.

From the fitters:

  •  “Every time they come out with a new iron, I think ‘this is the time performance gets flat. They aren’t going to be able to beat what they did.’ It is absolutely incredible. The best iron I’ve ever seen performance-wise. Ball speed numbers are crazy. I’ve had players picking up 30 yards with a 7-iron. Looks awesome. Feels great. Callaway continues to amaze me.”
  • “These go forever. I’ve had a lot of success — if you guy who flips at it or doesn’t lean the shaft enough to get dynamic loft. You give him Paradym, and he’s got some giddy up. They just flat out go forever. It’s an interesting iron sitting between game improvement and players iron”
  • “Super strong lofted. Super clean. Something that launches high and spin.”
  •  “Could be X too. Again the AI designed face, hollow body construction, along with a sexy look makes these irons awesome.”
  • “Lots of forgiveness in a small great looking golf club. Fantastic distance and feel.”

TaylorMade P790

Their story: SpeedFoam, which was the showpiece of the original (2017) P790 line gets an upgrade in the 2021 edition. Dubbed SpeedFoam Air, the ultralight urethane foam is 69 percent less dense than the 2019 iteration. As is the formula in golf club design, saving weight in one area allows engineers to relocate it to another to accomplish specific aims. In this case, it’s to aid launch. And that’s just what the folks at TM have done, moving the CG lower in the heads of P790 irons to the tune of an average of .5 millimeters.

From the fitters:

  • “This is one of our most sought-out/asked-about irons. A nice, clean look, but you’re still getting some forgiveness. I’d tell TaylorMade to keep doing what you’re doing.”
  • “High single digit, low double digit who is looking for as much help as possible, this is a great club. Ball speed. Distance. One of the best offerings year in and year out.”
  • “It fits a wide range of players…all the way up to 20-plus handicaps. Ball speed on off-center hits is tremendous. It’s not overly high or low launching. Hot face with spin rates in a happy medium. One of the easiest fits for a lot of players.”
  • “A great long iron, but great all the way through for a player who wants a little help all the way through”
  • “This series is a modern classic. Long-standing hollow-bodied performance. They’ve continued to improve this club. SpeedFoam Air is that much better. Fits a wide range of players. The perfect iron for many players. TaylorMade just needs to keep riding the wave.”

From the fitters:

  • “While it’s not the best metric, these are the most played irons among our fitters”
  • “Slight refinement here. A little better look and feel. Players iron with distance. Gain a bit of ball speed and distance but still have enough spin to control the golf ball.”
  • “Most forgiving players iron. V-Sole design gives significantly better turf interaction compared to a traditional sole.”
  • “This is a great players iron that is great on its own or easily blended with the ZX5 in the long irons or the blades in the short irons for a great combo set.”

2023 Best irons: Most technology packed

This is the “give me everything you got” list. These irons are the cream of the crop for offering technology to improve feel, distance, and ball speed. The great thing about the technology category is it’s not reserved for higher handicap golfers—it’s for anyone looking to get everything they can out of their game in an iron that also suits their eye.

Ping G430

Their story: Billed as Ping’s “longest iron ever”, the G430 irons combine a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to 2 more mph of ball speed, per the company. Callaway Great Big Bertha

Their story: By leveraging materials that are typically reserved for drivers, Callaway generated up to 96g of discretionary weight and precisely repositioned this saved weight in their new irons in design to increase launch and forgiveness.  The Great Big Bertha iron features the thinnest titanium face the brand has ever used in an iron. On top of that, it’s also the lightest. In addition, the Commercially Pure Grade 4 (CP4) Titanium body flexes more at impact than traditional steel and works together with the thinner face in a bid to transfer more energy to the ball.

From the fitters:

  • “Hotter than a lot of clubs in this category. This is the club for distance. Higher and farther than anything in this category. Tons of tungsten. The only issue with this club for players in this category is price. Everything else is exactly what this player needs. A great fit for a lot of 40-plus-year olds.”
  • “All that tungsten makes this club easy to hit for high handicaps and slow swing speeds.”
  • “Between AI design face, hollow body construction, and tons of tungsten.”
  • “Titanium/tungsten/carbon fiber. Crazy MOI.”

For more photos/info, read our launch piece.

TaylorMade Stealth HD

Their story: The new addition features an ultra-low profile head shape in the long irons designed to drive CG lower to help get the ball airborne with ease while progressive head sizes (each club is uniquely shaped and gets incrementally larger from 5-iron through pitching wedge) aim to help independently optimize the performance of each iron. An increased sole radius and step down design along the bottom of the club round out the all-new shape. Per TaylorMade, testing confirmed that increasing the sole arc from heel to toe led to more shots high on the face, which translates to higher launch and further helps this golfer get the ball airborne. The step down sole is designed to boost playability by reducing the amount of surface area that contacts the turf.

From the fitters:

  • “If you have a player who struggles with launch, just give them these.”
  • “I had a guy who couldn’t hit it through a second-story window, but the first swing he took with this, it went 60 feet in the air. It really goes straight up in the air, but it has all the tech and distance TaylorMade irons are known for. As we get into the season, I think this iron is going to do really well.”
  • “Higher handicappers want higher shots and shots that draw. With the HD — high draw — TaylorMade is delivering that. It’s a different club. Similar to how hybrids looked different 20 years ago. But they do what they’re supposed to do, and I always appreciate thinking outside of the box.”
  • “The face-wrapped designed face makes this iron hot all over the face and super forgiving. Also, love the hollow body for stability and speed as well. The HD really varies the CG allowing golfers to get the forgiveness and height needed to hit high bombs.”
  • “The all-new sole design helps get through the turf easier with the added weight in the back allowing for a player who struggles with launch to get the height they need with the added forgiveness to get a ball to launch properly and stop quicker on a green.”

2023 Best irons: The Shotmakers

Each one of these irons was designed with a single purpose: to provide the ultimate shotmaking weapon. You don’t have to be a tour player to appreciate the pleasure of hitting a well-struck shot with a club engineered to offer superior feedback. This category is all about control—and that doesn’t mean it “has to be a blade.”

From the fitters:

  • “While it’s not the best metric, these are the most played irons among our fitters”
  • “Slight refinement here. A little better look and feel. Players iron with distance. Gain a bit of ball speed and distance but still have enough spin to control the golf ball.”
  • “Most forgiving players iron. V-Sole design gives significantly better turf interaction compared to a traditional sole.”

Callaway Apex TCB

Their story: With internal and external MIM’d tungsten weighting, Callaway engineers precisely each irons CG within the 1025 mild carbon steel body. Tour-inspired size and shaping with a straighter leading edge, less offset, a thinner top line, and a smoother hosel transition distinguishes the TCB from the stock Apex CB.

From the fitters:

  • “Good lofts for spin, and you can flight them any way you want if you have the club speed.”
  • “Classic small compact look with the endless ability to shape shots into the window a better player is looking for. We have seen lots of wins on tour this season. Players who need spin will tend to gravitate towards this iron.”
  • “One of the best players irons Callaway has made. Great shape. Looks fantastic. Feels fantastic. You can feel that weight in the back, and obviously its done well on tour. They don’t need to change anything.”
  • “One of the best players irons out there but still has the right amount of forgiveness that player is looking for.”
  • “Excellent shape, sound, and feel from an iron with a bit of forgiveness as well. Tour response is excellent, and offering the same iron to the retail market is a very positive option for golfers looking to shape the ball.”

The new T100 face features a continuous cradle construction that aims to provide a seamless striking surface and a more uniform leading edge than its predecessor.

From the fitters

  • “A purist players club. For a better ballstriker. Not a ton of offset but still easy to launch and spin. It’s not forgiving within the category, but usually it’s not for a player looking for forgiveness. In the right window for launch. Great sound and feel.”
  • “The club that blade players transition to when they don’t want to go full muscleback…when you look down at it, it looks like a blade. You don’t see the back or the cavity. It has enough tech in it to make it forgiving on mishits. But it’s slim enough and has a thin enough topline that guys feel it has playability for shot shaping.”
  • “Still the GOAT in the high-tech players category. Titleist somehow manages to make it better looking with each update, more forgiving than they look.”
  • “Best low handicap iron head. Always performs well. Great look at address for that discerning golfer. Classic Titleist sound and feel.”
  • “Great ball speed and performance for a tour-style profile. For players looking for a classic players look combined with distance, this has to be in the mix.”

TaylorMade P7MC

Their story: To build the TaylorMade P7MC irons, the manufacturing process incorporates a 2,000-ton pressure forging to ensure the feel and sound is dialed in. This iron is all business, and anyone comparing this to the smaller P7MB (blade) will notice its slightly longer heel-to-toe length, and just a touch more offset which makes it a great candidate for gapping. It offers a crisp feel at impact and the workability of a blade iron, but in a platform that still offers forgiveness on shots hit outside of the middle. Looks, feel, and workability—it’s all here.

Mizuno Pro 223

Their story: The Mizuno Pro 223 irons conceal a ball speed-enhancing construction within the frame of a compact players cavity. A completely new technology platform from 4-7 iron combines Mizuno’s tested Chromoly Forging and Flow Micro-Slot – An innovation designed to produce extreme ball speeds from a small tour-ready profile. The irons deliver a face thickness of just 2.4mm (vs 2.6mm JPX921 Forged), and from 8-PW, the Pro 223 irons are constructed from 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel in a bid to offer excellent precision and control.

From the fitters:

  • “223 is tremendous. Should not be as forgiving as it is. Players clubs are getting a little too low spin, but this is still great. Definitely for the single-digit player. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to fit. It’s Mizuno, so everybody loves the feel.”
  • “When you have something in that 32-degree 7-iron range, and it feels good, looks good, sounds good and offers what the better player is looking for. Home run. For someone who isn’t a tour level-player but wants something that looks like a Mizuno with a little bit of help, this is great.”
  • “Forged Mizuno feel with great distance and control. Compact shape but enough ball speed to hang with other players distance irons.”
  • “Iron has done great for cutting spin for a high-spin player.”
